HolidayExtras.com research has revealed that beach picnics are a strictly English affair for a third of Brits.
When asked what is the most important item for a beach picnic, over a quarter of customers (26%) opted for traditional sandwiches (such as egg and cress). A further 10% said meaty British snacks including pork pies and sausages are essential al fresco fodder.
It also appears that we are more health conscious than you might think, with a fifth of people (19%) claiming that fresh fruit is the most important element of any beach picnic, and only two per cent choosing chocolate and crisps. Surprisingly, however, 20% of men have yet to be convinced about the simple pleasures of the picnic, saying they never have one.
Anthony Clarke Cowell, head of product innovation and merchandising at HolidayExtras.com, said: “The picnic is one of the high points of the summer for many of us. However, some people find them uncomfortable and awkward. I think the sand puts a lot of men off beach picnics – they don’t want anything to come between them and their pork pie!”
