Brits worry riots will affect tourism and the Olympics

As the country debates whether sentencing has been too harsh following the August riots, a new survey by HolidayExtras.com has found that the majority of Brits (63%) think the recent unrest will have a negative effect on UK tourism and that it puts the UK in a bad light.

Interestingly, it seems that younger age groups are most concerned about the long-term impact on Britain’s reputation and the upcoming Olympics, with 18% of men and 8% of women aged 18 – 24 considering the riots as serious as a terrorist attack.

However the older generation doesn’t seem as bothered; 37% of men and 18% of women aged 66 and over say it will soon be forgotten. Men generally are much less worried than women across the age groups.

Overall, 27% of HolidayExtras.com customers polled believe that the riots will soon be forgotten and 10% think that the consequences will be as bad as the aftermath of a terrorist attack.

Seamus McCauley, Editor-in-Chief of HolidayExtras.com, said: “There’s definitely a feeling that the August riots look bad for Britain. However, we have a year in which to dispel any fears amongst potential visitors and boost confidence in the country as a tourist destination. UK businesses – particularly in the travel industry – have a great opportunity to play a part in this.”
