As the Government pumps £4 million into the “Holidays at home are GREAT” campaign, more than half of us would like to escape the UK this year, according to a HolidayExtras.com poll.
When asked if they were planning a UK-based stay in 2012, 53% of customers totally rejected the prospect stating that an overseas holiday always takes priority over a staycation, and that a home-based break can never compare with getting out of the country.
However, a quarter of those surveyed (25%) have already made plans or a booking for a UK-based holiday and 11% claimed it was very likely that they would do so. A further 11% of HolidayExtras.com customers said they were not planning any more holidays this year.
Matthew Pack, CEO of HolidayExtras.com, said: “These are encouraging statistics in the light of the Government’s new campaign and ABTA’s opposition to it. As much as we all want to support events such as the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics, our industry also has a vital role to play in the UK economy – and needs support during tough times.”
In a recent response to the Government’s campaign that will actively discourage foreign holidays, Mark Tanzer, CEO, ABTA – The Travel Association, said:
“ABTA has always been a strong advocate for domestic tourism and fully supports the Government’s efforts to ensure that the positive global exposure offered by the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the Summer Olympics and Paralympics boosts foreign visitor numbers.
“However, we are very concerned that the Government is sponsoring a marketing campaign that appears to actively discourage UK holidaymakers from taking a foreign break: I’m sure the public want to make up their own mind about where to go on holiday. The outbound tourism industry employs hundreds of thousands of people throughout the UK and generates £27 billion annually in direct spend, making a fundamental and significant contribution to the economic health of the country.”
