Travel is getting more stressful, according to the results of a new poll from HolidayExtras.com.

A massive 86% of holiday-makers say that the journey is the most stressful part of their holiday, a rise of 13% in three years.*

Other factors such as language or cultural differences (7%), arriving in a strange place (5%) and too much time with loved ones (2%) are cited as minor holiday stresses.

In fact, spending quality time with our family is the main reason we want to get away on holiday according to this latest poll. And it seems that our motivation for going on holiday remains the same year after year.

In 2012, 41% of customers agree that being with loved ones is the best thing about going on holiday, whilst exploring a new place is tops for 35%. A beach-loving 18% are looking forward to lying in the sun doing nothing.

Only 4% rate eating and drinking as the best thing about a holiday, and delving into a good book is the priority for just 2%.

Anthony Clarke Cowell, Associate Merchandising Director at HolidayExtras.com, said: “Holiday-makers perceive the journey to be the worst part of their holiday, but they’re willing to go through it to get some precious family time together.

“Half-term is coming up, and I know from travels with our big extended family that a simple thing like booking meet and greet parking can make such a difference. It cuts out the stress and gives you more time to relax before your flight, so you can have a coffee and a chat or watch the planes take off with little ones.”
