Netball event at Holiday Extras for International Women’s Day

Holiday Extras, celebrated International Women’s day last week by arranging a netball tournament in partnership with England Netball – who brought a 15m x 8m purpose-built court for the event.

England Netball scored and umpired the event and the winner of the two-hour tournament  was the team that had won the most games. England Netball will be presenting the winners’ trophy and match ball at Holiday Extras in a couple of weeks’ time.

Madeleine Duggan, at Holiday Extras, who helped to organise the event said: “We felt that this netball tournament would be a great opportunity for Holiday Extras to be involved in a female-led sporting event for International Women’s Day. Netball is traditionally a game for women but in this five-a-side tournament the teams were mixed, with a maximum of three men on each team.

The matches were enthusiastically supported by other Holiday Extras people and the event was hugely exciting for all involved. Everyone in the teams really enjoyed the healthy competition and are calling for a repeat event!”

Editors notes:

  • Jordon Mann, who works at Shepway Sports Trust as Active Communities Manager, kick-started the netball culture at Holiday Extras and has also created the netball brand, ‘Tri-Fusion’.
  • Now, there are three Tri-Fusion teams in the Folkestone Netball League: Tri-Fusion Air, Tri-Fusion Fire and Tri-Fusion Storm. Air and Fire are half and half HX and non-Holiday Extras players; Storm is predominantly made up of Academy teachers.
  • Just over £1K sponsorship was raised for Air and Fire in Autumn 2016. This paid for the England Netball affiliation fees for the season, netball dresses, bibs, match balls and getting the Holiday Extras-branded bibs, which are worn every week at matches.

As well as spreading the Tri-Fusion word, Jordon is a qualified netball coach, umpire and runs a bi-monthly netball training session at Three Hills Sports Centre. More than 20 women attend each session and it’s open to people of all abilities, from the general public to league players.
